A breakdown is a bridge section in a metal or hardcore song that is used instead of a guitar solo. Breakdowns usually consist of slow, yet heavy guitar riffs with great emphasis on simple percussion. The slower pace of the breakdown creates a sharp contrast with the speed of the rest of the song. The song will be going at breakneck pace and then suddenly drop into the breakdown. The pace and sound of the breakdown is very conducive to moshing. Breakdowns are used predominantly in hardcore, metalcore, deathcore and groove metal. Some nu metal bands made use of breakdowns with emphasis being on the turntables. Nu metal breakdowns tend to be played at a more upbeat tempo than breakdowns in the other metal categories.
