Jonathon Athon, Bassist for BLACK TUSK, Died of Injuries at Age 32

Family, friends, and fans of BLACK TUSK are shocked and grieving the loss of Jonathon Athon, who died from injuries sustained when his Harley Davidson motorcycle collided with an SUV. The band released the following statement:

“It is with deep regret and saddened hearts that we must tell you that Athon passed away this morning from injuries sustained from his motorcycle accident. Doctors told us that he suffered irreparable brain damage shortly after the accident. He has been in a coma and sustained by life support until now. As per his wishes, we removed Athon from his life support systems and his organs will be donated. His body will be cremated and a memorial is being planned for family and friends in Savannah. He was 32 years old and will be forever missed. Thank you all for your support during this devastating time for us, it would have made him proud.”

We here at METAL DESCENT offer condolences to Jonathon’s family and friends. His death is a terrible loss to the Heavy Metal community.

AFTER THE DUST HAS  SETTLED

We can’t write a review for every album, but sometimes we come across some awesome releases after the first week chart numbers. Here are a few that Mike Lawrence had a chance to enjoy:

CAVALERA CONSPIRACY Pandemonium

Max Cavalera still has “it” and he’s proven so three times within the last year alone.  Toward the end of 2013, SOULFLY released what could quite possibly be their best album yet.  Then there was the amazing debut from the supergroup KILLER BE KILLED earlier this year.  Now we get the latest release from his project with brother Igor Cavalera.  Pandemonium is an absolute death thrash clinic.  The music quickly slams your ear drums like a tidal wave and then pulls you in with a rip current of infectious grooves, ferocious riffs and ridiculous solos.  We only wish that Cavalera’s former band, SEPULTURA, was still this good.

Rating: 4.5/5

SOULBURN The Suffocating Darkness

Listening to The Suffocating Darkness is like jumping in a time machine and traveling back to a time when extreme metal was just coming into its own. The songs feature a seamless mix of blackened thrash and death/doom.  There have only been a handful of bands in metal’s history that have been able to blend such differing paces so well. Now SOULBURN joins that elite group.  Fans of early Celtic Frost, Bathory and Venom, rejoice!  Your modern day metal heroes have arrived.

Rating: 4.6/5

LORD MANTIS  Death Mask

Our readers have been hounding me to check out this album for quite some time now but my thought was, “Oh right another blackened sludge album.  Woo hoo.”  Thankfully on one of our slower weeks, I decided to take the plunge.  Death Mask was literally like nothing I had ever heard before.  It flies so far away from the formulaic blackened sludge malaise that we have all come to know.  The songs are raw and stick to your brain like apoxy fumes.  Do not let the violent imagery and lyrical content push you away from this album.  It is one of the best and most unique records you will hear this year.
