The Most Popular Heavy Metal Songs on YouTube and VEVO

by Bill Nihill on August 7, 2013

Heavy metal songs on YouTubeThis list is bound to surprise you. Today, we’ll feature the most popular heavy metal songs on YouTube (and Vevo), sorted by videos with the most views. We only featured songs that received 10 million or more views, or this list would have been extremely long. The top of this list features the most viewed heavy metal videos on YouTube, with the bottom featuring those near the 10 million mark. The view counts are left approximate, rounded off to the nearest million since they will be fluctuating on a daily basis.

Metallica OneIn the old days of metal, album sales were regarded as the perfect barometer to gauge the popularity of a song or album. Not anymore. With today’s biggest metal bands only selling a fraction of what popular metal bands sold in the 80’s and 90’s, it’s difficult to compare today’s best metal albums to older metal albums in terms of success and popularity. YouTube may help to bridge that gap, though you may notice from this list that some of the genre’s most iconic bands are absent or barely represented. What, no Megadeth, Anthrax, Queensryche, Exodus, Faith No More, Celtic Frost, Lamb of God, Venom, Death, or even Judas Priest? These are the real numbers, and the numbers don’t lie. Near the top of the list, you’ll see the same bands represented over and over again.

Linkin Park New DivideIf you’re wondering why Linkin Park and Avenged Sevenfold appear so prominently on this list, it’s the younger demographic who are frequenting YouTube more than the older metal crowd. While Motley Crue fans are still listening to their old CDs, Linkin Park fans are listening to their favorite songs on Vevo, which skews numbers. Newness is also a factor. New songs get more views, and tend to settle and slowly grow. Old songs just grow slowly without an initial popularity surge, giving older songs from Metallica, Dio, Iron Maiden, and Ozzy the disadvantage.

A note for this list: You’ll often see multiple uploads of the same song on YouTube. We only counted the video with the highest view count, and left it at that. We also excluded songs that were live versions of songs that didn’t have recording studio versions, like Linkin Park’s cover of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.” However, if the live version of a song has more view counts than the studio version, we’ll use the version with the higher view count (like Metallica’s “Enter Sandman”).

Ozzy OsbourneNo Sabbath, No Megadeth, No Motley Crue?

Black Sabbath appears on the list but once. Even Ozzy’s solo material is on the list only twice. Metallica’s numbers may have been higher had they not resisted VEVO for so many years. They are a latecomer to the world of YouTube, since many videos were removed over the years, decreasing their total view counts. Megadeth isn’t on the list, even for “Symphony of Destruction.” Even Soundgarden appears only once on this list. Others not present: Lacuna Coil, Poison, Motley Crue, Twisted Sister, Dream Theater, and Children of Bodom.

**UPDATE** Judas Priest is finally on the list with the music video for “Painkiller”.

If you’re wondering what artists are making these days through VEVO, which pays more than YouTube, it’s roughly $70,000 for every 10 million views. Cut that in half for YouTube, because they pay about half of what VEVO does.  That means Guns N’ Roses earned about $1.25 million for “November Rain” alone.  System of a Down earned about $1.06 million for “Chop Suey.”  YouTube videos also serve ads on videos, and monetize with a link to download the song via iTunes, Google Play, or Amazon MP3.

System of a DownNot happy with the way this list is looking? You can do a few things to change it. First, thumbs up the video on YouTube. Second, share the video on StumbleUpon by clicking the “thumbs up” via their toolbar. This, along with sharing the videos socially on Facebook, etc., may be the best way to get new views to videos.

Some other things to take away from this list:

  • Ballads are popular.
  • Nu metal is alive and well (Limp Bizkit is still getting a surprisingly high number of views).
  • It’s obvious the younger generation has no clue about heavy metal.
  • In the grand scheme of music, heavy metal isn’t that popular right now. Look at this list of the most viewed videos of all time on Vevo, and you’ll see “November Rain” is #59, which is a ballad, and not exactly the most “metal” song out there.

Great list I think. If only I could get all the tracks as a playlist?

Metalhead927 August 11, 2013 at 2:28 pm

tnx for this recent list, but in my opinion some songs arent metal.
exambles of songs ( from top 30):
Guns n roses’- November rain, Sweet child o mine, Don’t cry or Paradise city
Linkin parks – Castle of glass, The catalyist, New divide, Burn it down or What i’ve done
scorpions – wind of change

But tnx for the metal inspiration of other songs 🙂

Mike August 12, 2013 at 6:40 pm

Thanks for the opinion. We respectfully disagree on the Guns N’ Roses and Scorpions songs.

Don September 20, 2013 at 2:34 am

The younger generation has some clues to heavy metal. (Basically myself). Most just listen to fucking pop and rap and all those things which they call music. Metal is the real music. I used to listen to pop music. After I heard these songs I immediately knew that the pop songs were a bunch of crap. Also cant believe that megadeth isn’t on the list. They are fricking awesome

berock212 November 23, 2013 at 7:24 pm

I’m disappointed that November rain was number 1. I mean it’s barely metal, I was hoping for a faster song, more metal song to be number one.

prabhat December 29, 2013 at 4:18 am

I Dont think November Rain is metal and some songs of Linkin park are not Metal, otherwise it is a great list. Thanks for sharing this..i personally prefer Metallica..MetaL for LifE..I AM FROM INDIA..

Marc February 6, 2014 at 3:23 pm

What abaout Nirvana??

Mike February 7, 2014 at 9:06 am

Nirvana is great, but not a metal band. Grunge/Noise Rock

Marty September 11, 2017 at 5:06 pm

Still it’s closer metal then song New Divide by Linkin Park.

Chris February 28, 2014 at 6:01 pm

Where on earth is The Number Of The Beast?

Mike February 28, 2014 at 9:18 pm

I know we asked the same question. The newer generations unfortunately seem to have no respect for the originators of metal

Elijah March 1, 2014 at 2:08 pm

Why Suicide Silence’s “You Only Live Once” is not in this list? 33 000 000 views man!

Mike March 1, 2014 at 4:49 pm

Just added Suicide Silence. Thanks for giving us the update. We try to keep the list as up to date as possible, so comments like this are really helpful.

Dudech July 23, 2014 at 10:37 am

I think “Unanswered” by Suicide Silence is missing too

Mike March 3, 2014 at 1:35 pm

Great list but I was wondering, why no Skillet? Saying monster isn’t a metal song would be ridiculous if you look at a lot of this list. Was it just missed?

Mike March 4, 2014 at 7:06 pm

It may not have had that many views when we first wrote this, but we just added it. Monster definitely falls under the subegnre of alternative metal so it works. Thank you for the suggestion.

Jace McPherson March 7, 2014 at 12:28 am

Where is Asking Alexandria in this list?

James May 9, 2014 at 11:12 pm

Hey I just saw the videos that are near 10 million, and the ones that right now are over 10 million are Judas Priest, Megadeth and Alice in Chains, they deserve to be on that list now

Dilshaan May 25, 2014 at 11:16 am

What about Three Days Grace?! They’re alternative metal, it counts right! 🙂

Like, I Hate Everything About You (64 million views) and Animal I Have Become (37 million views).

They’re awesome too ya know!

Ganondox October 5, 2014 at 4:00 am

If Linkin Park’s electro-rap songs make it on here, then I don’t see why Three Days Grace’s actual rock songs don’t.

Black Heart October 27, 2014 at 10:41 am

I agree with you but some people think that 3 days grace is more rock than metal…. Not really sure…

Ganondox October 5, 2014 at 3:59 am

Wasted Years is an awesome song, but I’m pretty sure it’s only supposed to be appear once…

Ganondox October 5, 2014 at 4:04 am

This also needs to be added:

Black Heart October 27, 2014 at 10:36 am

I saw more of my generations songs then the good songs that are suppose to be here. Yea there is some really good songs and some that i think suck but personal opinion. The classics are always the best.

Ciro February 17, 2015 at 10:53 am

Your list is an awesome work, just what i looked for, many thanks from Argentina
